Tamil Nadu (TN) RTO

The Tamil Nadu RTO makes certain that the rules of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 regarding road safety and transport are employed strictly in the state. The RTO is directed by the Transport Commissioner and comes within the purview of the Transport Department of Tamil Nadu.

Functions Of The Tamil Nadu RTO

  • Driving license – Issuing and renewing driver licenses and driving school licenses
  • Vehicle registration – The RTO covers initial registration and renewal of registration of vehicles, ownership transfer, granting fitness certificate for private and transport vehicles.
  • Permits – The RTO issues permits for commercial vehicles such as merchandise carriers, passenger buses, cabs, school buses, etc.
  • Taxes, fees, and penalties – Collection of road tax, IMV fees, fees for licenses and registration and departmental irregularities penalties, etc. to ensure implementation of transport regulations.
  • Inspection of the vehicle at check posts – Inspection of vehicles on the road so that they comply with the conditions set by the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
  • Environmental protection – Keeping a check on air pollution due to exhaust fumes from vehicles by regularly scrutinizing Pollution Control (PUC).
  • Upgrading the procedure for convenience – RTOs across the country have adopted web-based services for the convenience of vehicle owners.

Process Of Vehicle Registration In Tamil Nadu RTO

According to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 an unregistered vehicle cannot be driven in Tamil Nadu. The owner must apply for registration to the regional transport officer within a week of its purchase providing the following documents:

  • The vehicle for inspection
  • Properly filled Form 20 with passport size photograph
  • Sale certificate and original invoice
  • Temporary registration from dealer
  • A copy of vehicle insurance policy documents
  • KYC documents like PAN card or Aadhar card
  • PUC certificate
  • Relevant fee and road taxes receipts

Subsequent to inspection and validation of the application the vehicle will be allotted a registration number.

Transfer Of Vehicle Ownership With Tamil Nadu RTO

For transfer of ownership, an application must be submitted to the RTO with approval of both buyer and seller of the vehicle to avoid legal hassles. You need a couple of documents like:

  • The vehicle registration certificate
  • Necessary forms available at the RTO
  • Chassis number
  • Copy of the vehicle Insurance policy
  • Necessary ID proofs and photographs
  • Most recent PUC certificates
  • A NOC if the vehicle has to be transferred to a new RTO.

Acquiring A Vehicle Insurance Policy Tamil Nadu

According to the Motor Vehicle Act 1988, it is an offense to drive an uninsured vehicle.
